An Inventory of Time

Historical Clock Towers & Global Icons

They are the silent guardians of our squares. Some are draped in Baroque ornamentation, facing the Bosphorus; others are rugged stone pillars watching over the Anatolian plains. This collection categorizes the clock towers not just by geography, but by their architectural soul. Choose a path below to explore archive of clock towers.

The Golden Era

Archive of Clock Towers

In 1901, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his ascension to the throne, Sultan Abdulhamid II issued an imperial decree encouraging governors across the Ottoman Empire to erect clock towers. It was a modernization project on a grand scale. The resulting structures are the masterpieces of the collection—blending Oriental silhouettes with Western mechanics.

Guardians of the Hinterland

Beyond the imperial capitals, clock towers served as the focal points of trade and civic life in the provinces. From the hilltop sentinel of Bursa, watching over the first Ottoman capital, to the merchant-funded tower of Çanakkale guarding the strait, these structures represent the diverse architectural dialects of Anatolia.

Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) in London
The Voice of Empire

London: Elizabeth Tower

Often mistakenly called "Big Ben" (which is actually the name of the great bell), this neo-Gothic masterpiece is the absolute standard for clock towers worldwide. Its four-faced chiming mechanism has set the time for the British Empire for over 160 years.

Zytglogge Medieval Tower in Bern
Medieval Engineering

Bern: Zytglogge

A medieval fortification turned clock tower. It is famous not just for telling time, but for its elaborate astronomical clock and mechanical figures (automata) that perform a show every hour—a precursor to modern robotics.

Prague Astronomical Clock
The Legend

Prague: The Orloj

The oldest clock still in operation, installed in 1410. It displays the position of the sun and moon, and the "Walk of the Apostles." Legend says the clockmaker was blinded so he could never recreate such a masterpiece elsewhere.

Did You Know: The Duality of Time

Most Ottoman clock towers were built during a transitional era. Consequently, many originally featured two different dials: one set to "Alaturka" (where sunset marks 12:00) for the rhythm of prayer, and the other to "Alafranga" (European Mean Time) for trains and bureaucracy. These towers were the physical interfaces of a changing empire.
