Archive of Clock Towers
In 1901, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his ascension to the throne, Sultan Abdulhamid II issued an imperial decree encouraging governors across the Ottoman Empire to erect clock towers. It was a modernization project on a grand scale. The resulting structures are the masterpieces of the collection—blending Oriental silhouettes with Western mechanics.

From the misty banks of the Thames in London to the medieval streets of Prague, explore the international giants that have defined horological history. We analyze these global icons to find the “twin souls” of our own Anatolian towers.

Most Ottoman clock towers were built during a transitional era. Consequently, many originally featured two different dials: one set to "Alaturka" (where sunset marks 12:00) for the rhythm of prayer, and the other to "Alafranga" (European Mean Time) for trains and bureaucracy. These towers were the physical interfaces of a changing empire.
